Better Platform For Web Hosting Linux vs Windows

The term web hosting is one that is often stumbled upon while browsing the internet. One need not spend a lot of time in understanding this concept as the name says a major part of it tough. Web hosting is an internet service that helps in wide spreading of a website. This service can be taken help of by either an individual or an organization. The basic reason behind doing so is to make the website accessible to everyone via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that are responsible for providing space on the servers. These can spaces can either be bought or leased by individuals or organizations to send their websites on air.

Once having selected the web host, it then comes down to selecting the right operating system. The reason is that the OS should not only be economic but also reliable. One must be very sure that the OS will be able to sustain the load that will be provided to it. The windows and Linux are two of the most famous OS’s that are used for this purpose. So to select which one of them is the better one, one has to have a look at them individually so as to decide clearly.

Windows

The Windows platform allows for using web hosting on its Windows server (both 2003 and 2008). There are more than a few reasons as to why one may select the Windows platform. It provides with the hosting deployment accelerator which reduces the task of keeping together all important documentation. Windows supports the .ASP and .NET languages, which have found a lot of usage and derivations. These two languages also allow for a very strong network because of their rich and easy to control nature along with abundance of features. Windows provides with a very flexible web server, which means that it is very secure and easy to handle and manage the files associated with it. The presence of a very healthy database only adds to its features.

Linux

One of the major problems with Linux earlier was the difficulty to interact because of the interface. But over the years a sharp development in it sees Linux giving others a run for their money. It being a free and open source Operating System makes is more than useful where the modifications can be done on the user side. One of the biggest advantages that Linux has is that one does not have to spend any money on it what so ever. A very strong and secure database, along with a very flexible framework makes Linux a very strong competitor. The fact that Linux is very stable when it comes to working, keeps it leaps and bounds ahead of others.

Conclusion

It all comes down to the user requirements that either Windows or Linux must be chosen. Both have their own advantages, but taken into account specific purposes, one will surely outshine the other. Keeping in mind the security, flexibility and a powerful database, the platform must be selected as either Windows or Linux.

So, you believe that links are the one and only factor that determine whether your website stick to coveted positions in the SERP and hosting has got nothing to do with it, right? Yah, this is popular perception shared by majority of webmasters and they tend to negate the reality that web hosting can make or break their entire online endeavor. Now, you might wonder how the hosting can play such a crucial role in the entire thing. Ok, let me explain the entire thing to you:

Pathetic Technical Support: Lets say , you are working like hell and just when all your honest efforts start taking shape in the form of a sudden spike in the traffic, you see your website is not functioning. It has got to be something to do with web hosting since there is high probability that the website has got crashed under the sheer volume of traffic. The real drama unfolds when you contact the technical department of your web hosting company. They may start with a high note but eventually you will find that they are not just getting it. Almost all of them are technically challenged and there is little they can do to make your website unless a senior intervenes. So, if you do not want to miss out on this kind of opportunity, you need to move to a reliable web hosting service company.

Downtime: Though most web hosting companies vaunt that they offer 99% uptime, few of them manage to fulfill their promises. If your website remains down forever, you might end up losing a great many number of visitors. You definitely do not like this concept right. So, if you are serious about making your online marketing campaign a great success, you need to do find a web hosting service provider that stick to its promises no matter what.

Bandwidth Limit: Do you know how much bandwidth limit your website is entrusted with? You seem clueless about it. Do not be so, go and ask your web hosting service provider. Now the disadvantage of low bandwidth limit is that your website will always show bandwidth limit exceed whenever there is a spike in traffic. So that means you will always be losing potential clients because of sucking bandwidth limit. Does not sound encouraging right? I hope you have started seeing the probable impacts of a bad web hosting service.

Location: For say, your targeted country is Greece and your website is hosted in India. How that sounds? Pretty bad. It makes common sense to get your website hosted in your targeted country. So, check the server location of your website and if you see that there is not much relation between them, you need to ask them get your website hosted in a country located nearby.

Speed: Search engines have become obsessive with speed and that means, you need to take some additional steps to ensure that your website’s loading time is impressive. And to achieve an impressive loading time, you need to make some changes in the .htaccess file and for that you need to have access to root folder of your website.

The word “expose” can mean many things. For each definition, there’s a way to apply it the social networking giant Twitter; from deliberate admittance to an accidental slip. The format makes it simple to expose yourself, one hundred and forty characters at a time.

Self-Promotion – One of the most important things an aspiring artist or businessperson can do is to promote themselves in order to gain exposure. Twitter is among the favorite platforms for branding and reputation building.

Coming Out – A surefire way of exposing a long-held secret in a large, public way is to come out of the closet via tweet. A well-placed hashtag will insure that your declaration reaches an audience far wider than just those who are following your feed.

Attaching Your Real Life Name to Your Online Identity – It’s not uncommon for people to cultivate on online persona that’s quite different from their offline identity. Creating a connection between the two personalities is exposing yourself in a big way!

Accidentally Sharing Risque Photographs – Twilight Saga actor Bronson Pelletier found out the hard way last year that sharing the link to an online photo-hosting site like Photobucket can allow those who follow the link to browse an entire album, if it isn’t protected. Thousands of fans accessed pictures of Pelletier in his underwear before he realized his mistake.

Make a Confession – We all harbor secrets that we sometimes consider confessing to; doing so on Twitter is making yourself vulnerable in a big way. Exposing a deep secret to the entire world is a major, courageous step.

Speak Ill of Your Job – Exposing yourself to the ire of an employer is as simple as making derogatory comments about the company you work for or a boss. Many companies have instituted policies against such behavior, making it a terminable offense.

Share Controversial Opinions – Politics and religion are two of the hot-button topics that can stir up controversy amongst your followers. Exposing your opinions to the world on delicate subjects like these is the work of a moment.

Follow a Guilty-Pleasure Celebrity – Even the coolest of us have soft spots for movies or musicians that we’d rather not admit to; the simple act of following a celebrity related to the subject can expose you to the guffaws of those who browse your “Following” list.

Tweeting Under The Influence – There was a time, not so long ago, when drunk dialing was the worst alcohol-induced phone snafu a person could make. With the advent of smartphones, sharing your drunken proclamations with the world from the comfort of a bar stool became a snap.

Sharing Links To Illegal Downloads – The controversial Stop Online Piracy Act focuses on just such behavior. Under the wording of the bill, one shared link to pirated files could potentially result in penalties to the administrators of Twitter. It would also expose you as a file-sharing user.

One of 2011′s most hotly contested political issues, the Stop Online Piracy Act, has spilled over into 2012. The language and far-reaching implications of the bill have caused high-profile workers within the entertainment industry to publicly oppose it; even supporters admit that it could vastly change the internet as we know it. Here are ten of the popular websites that could be potentially destroyed, should SOPA pass.

Facebook – Indisputably one of the most popular social networking sites in the history of the internet, Facebook boasts more than 800 million users around the globe. These users are currently able to post any link they like to their walls or those of their friends; those links can house legal and illegal content with no repercussions to the site itself. Under SOPA, advertizing revenue and any payments could be blocked for the entire network, should one complaint of infringing content be filed.

YouTube – Anyone who uses video-sharing giant YouTube has, at some point, come across a clip that’s been removed due to copyright infringement complaints. In the event of SOPA’s passing, each time one of those videos are reported, all revenue generated by the ads on the site would be blocked. Millions of dollars could be potentially lost.

Twitter – The number of tweets posted by Twitter users each day is estimated to be in the range of about 50 million; this mind-boggling volume of information shared by users worldwide makes it almost impossible to monitor on an individual basis, opening the door for SOPA-infringing complaints that—you guessed it—block ad revenue. One tweet with a link to copyrighted material could easily shut down all payments to the site until the situation is resolved.

Google – In addition to limiting the search results that would legally be allowed, Google’s cash cow AdSense could also be affected by SOPA. This one-two punch might not spell the end for the company immediately, but could change the way services operate to the extent that they’d be virtually unrecognizable by pre-SOPA standards.

MegaUpload – File locker sites like MegaUpload definitely house a vast amount of pirated media, but they’re also frequently used for legitimate file-sharing and backup purposes, which is where the conundrum sets in. While other lockers at least pay lip-service to the idea of DMCA laws, MegaUpload blatantly thumbs their collective noses at the notion of removing copyrighted material. As a result, SOPA is ostensibly worded specifically to police such sites, up to and including blocking access to American internet users altogether.

Tumblr – Many popular sites have a section related to sharing the content they house; among the buttons is a link to micro-blogging powerhouse Tumblr. With one click, Tumblr users can share links to almost anything; this feature would effectively cripple the site in the event of SOPA’s enactment. Concerns about the bill spurred the site’s administrators to launch a simulated censorship “blackout,” during which users were presented with a real-life representation of what the bill could do; the change prompted users to call their House Representatives at an average of 3.6 calls per second at its peak.

Etsy – The online marketplace for handcrafted, vintage and artisan wares Etsy could find themselves devastated by SOPA in the event of a copyright infringement accusation. The sheer number of products offered by sellers creates a dilemma for the site; approving each item before posting would be virtually impossible. Should a craftsperson offer one product with infringing artwork, the bill could stop payment on each and every transaction facilitated by the site.

Flickr – Though the site makes a concerted effort to prevent the hosting of copyrighted images and takes removal requests very seriously, Flickr could easily be disabled by SOPA. Blacklisting the site and blocking it at a DNS level would be well within the scope of the bill, should one illegally shared image be discovered.

Reddit – The Reddit community has been among the most vocal in its opposition of SOPA, which has been dubbed the American Internet Censorship Act by users. Because the foundation of the site is sharing content, it would be impossible to regulate every shared link. Administrators have publicly stated that they would almost certainly be forced into shutting down if the act passes.

Digg – Like Reddit, Digg is primarily a content sharing site. Links to streaming video and other information are shared by users and suggested; compliance with SOPA would require that each link be housed on a site with absolutely no infringing content. Essentially, a legitimate link could still wreak havoc, should the linked site contain even one illegally shared piece of content. Combing every site in its entirety before allowing a link to be posted would be impossible, which could easily lead to Digg’s demise.

Learning to type is one of those crucial skills that everyone needs to know, especially considering how commonplace computers are becoming. They’re in our offices, our homes, our schools, our cell phones… they’re everywhere. Some employers have even made typing skills a job requirement, having prospective employees take typing tests before they even interview. Mastering this skill early on is the best way to tackle it.

Texting – You may think this is a joke, but with how often kids are on their cell phones these days and the fact that most cell phones keyboards mimic computer keyboards, texting really is making people better and more adept at typing. While it may not be the preferred way for kids to learn how to type, it is rather effective…

Typing games – Any game that makes a learning experience fun is a great way to get kids involved and ‘studying’. A lot of typing games are so geared towards looking like a game that kids don’t even realize how much information they’re absorbing in the process. For instance, when I was growing up I learned how to type playing Mario Teaches Typing – it was set up exactly like the Mario video games and every letter you typed correctly made Mario jump up and bump a coin out.

Typing sentences – While it may be a little more boring than learning to type while also playing Mario, typing certain sentences repeatedly will help you learn the lay of the keyboard and get comfortable with all of the letters, obscure ones included. Sentences like “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” and “pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs” are effective sentences to practice typing when you’re trying to learn how to type without looking at the keyboard.

Websites – There are a plethora of websites out there that are geared towards teaching you how to type correctly – some free and some for a fee. Websites are a nice tool to use because you can access them virtually anywhere with an internet connection and practice to your heart’s content.

Software – Contrary to websites, you can also buy software to install on your laptop or desktop computer that will help you learn the ins and outs of typing. The benefit to having software is that you don’t need an internet connection to be able to use it. It will also give you all of the relevant information you need to know, like your accuracy rate and speed at typing.

Typing Tests – The internet has plenty of online typing tests you can take to gauge how good you are at typing under pressure. Most of them are timed and some of them don’t allow you to delete so that you can see how well you type without backspacing. You should consider taking a typing test throughout your learning experience to assess your progress and see your improvements.

Toy Computers – If you want your kids to learn how to type early on you should consider investing in a toy computer for them that has preloaded games and quizzes on them so that they can get familiar with the keyboard layout while they’re still young. This allows it to become almost second nature.

Computer Classes – Most schools and local colleges will offer typing courses that you can enroll in throughout the year that will teach you or your children everything you need to know about typing correctly and effectively. Since no one wants to use the hunt and peck method for forever, these are a good way to learn correct techniques and have a teacher there to ask questions to when you hit a snag in the learning process.

Practice with the keys covered – One way to get comfortable with typing without looking at the keyboard is to cover kid’s hands while they’re typing so they are forced to learn the layout of the keyboard and rely on instinct to type the right letters.

Hide the letters with colored tape – Another way to get kids used to typing without relying on looking at the keyboard is to place colored masking tape over the different letters on the keys. Cover the letters that each finger uses with the same colored tape so that they remember which finger touches what. This will help them learn to keep fingers on the home row and to branch out to the top and bottom rows accordingly.

Learning to type is a key skill that everyone should learn at some point in their lives and one that you will never regret investing time in perfecting. Plus it can be a fun experience if you engage the right tools to help you along the way.

Facebook is seeking $5 billion in the company’s initial public offering, almost three times the size of the previous tech IPO record-holder (Google, with $1.7 billion, in 2004). Famously private about details (well, their own, anyway), Facebook’sIPOfiling has provided an enlightening glimpse into the particulars of the top social media company’s real business.

In many ways, it’s no wonder that Facebook kept their finances under wraps for so long. The company’s own “Summary Risk Factors” provide a number of very good reasons not to invest in Facebook. We’ve combined them into a few common themes, and added some details that the company neglected to mention.

1. The Limits of Growth. From the IPO filing: “If we fail to retain existing users or add new users, or if our users decrease their level of engagement with Facebook, our revenue, financial results, and business may be significantly harmed.” Plainly speaking, most of the people who want to be Facebook users are already there.

Saturation and Penetration

In the US, that’s about 75% ofthepopulation, and US Facebook growth has slowed to 16% in the past year. Looking elsewhere, several other countries (such as China, Japan, and Russia) have proven to be all but impenetrable due to content-related barriers (i.e., censorship) or simply from more popular local competition (VKontakte, Cyworld, Mixi, etc.).

Where does Facebook expect to see significant growth? India and Brazil, where the company has to compete with Orkut — yes, that’s Orkut. Google’s earlier social media venture, the target of much derision in tech circles, saw considerable success in both India and Brazil. Even if Facebook didn’t have to wean users from existing social media habits, there is no reason to be confident about the company’s ability to deliver regionally compelling content or advertising.

If Facebook cannot grow, then it must wring more from its existing user base. “In terms of engagement, Facebook has said over the years that around half of all users log on every day,” reports EricEldonofTechCrunch. “Nielsen [reports] that Facebook users spent an average of around 7 hours and 45 minutes on the site per month…” That’s a lot of time that could be spent generating revenue… but this number does not come close to truly representing ‘engagement’.

It’s no secret that a sizable portion of FB users continue to merely appear logged in, while their focus (or physical presence) is far away from any revenue-enhancing activity on the site. No solid numbers exist on the number of Facebook accounts which exist but don’t represent any revenue opportunity, and that’s a potentially large percentage — including temporary or otherwise abandoned accounts, users who block or simply ignore ads, accounts that purely exist to provide updates for organizations and interests, accounts for dogs and fictional identities, etc.

2. “Facebook was not originally created to be a company,” says CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself, in theletter accompanying the IPOfiling. Whether you take him at his word or not, the simple truth is that any money-making effort by Facebook is bolted on after the fact. The company has prospered from the ‘free and always will be’ approach, and you can bet that users will resist paying for anything that they’re accustomed to getting for free. This leaves a fairly narrow range of options for revenue.

Advertising

IPO: “We generate a substantial majority of our revenue from advertising. The loss of advertisers, or reduction in spending by advertisers with Facebook could seriously harm our business.” Could? Ad revenue growth slowed from 144% in 2009 – 2010 to 68.9% in 2010 -2011 (ad revenue totals: $764 million, or 98% of FB revenue, in 2009; $1.89 billion in 2010; and $3.15 billion (or 85% of revenue) in 2011).

“But advertisers still aren’t completely comfortable with Facebook’s ad vehicles,” writes ChristopherZinsli of theWallStreet Journal, “some of which – like sponsored stories – are seen as experimental and unproven. If advertisers don’t stick around, Facebook has few other revenue options to fall back on.”

The Zynga Factor

Zynga’s own IPO brought up similar issues. For one thing, the social game developer was criticized for being too tightly connected to Facebook, to which Zynga replied that it was actively looking for ways to expand beyond Facebook. Nearly all of Facebook’s non-advertising revenue (12%, or $445 million) is accounted for by Zynga. Facebook could suffer from their partner’s success OR failure — if Zynga’s games become less popular or more popular on another platform, Facebook would lose revenue. If Zynga becomes more successful in general, that 30% cut might start to seem too generous, and Facebook would lose revenue on renegotiation.

3. Let’s ask “why now?” IPO: “Our business is highly competitive, and competition presents an ongoing threat to the success of our business.” The most obvious answer to the question is that Facebook is now worried about Google’s success at integrating Google+ and other initiatives to its search results and advertising revenue. However, one unintentional side-effect of a Facebook IPO may be to weaken any anti-competitive investigations into Google (i.e., if Facebook proves itself to be more competitive, Google may have much less to worry about from US and EU regulators… which means that the cash-rich company will be able to concentrate more resources on overtaking Facebook’s social media lead).

Another answer? Maybe the “Zuckerberg Model” has become unsustainable.

Facebook’s CEO dismissed going public for years, and countless followed in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. Perhaps there isn’t any further to go, and there are no more investors who are willing to wait for a return; so the IPO is a way to cash out while the valuation is still artificially high. At the very least, Facebook has hit the SEC’s 500-shareholder ceiling, and must now make their financial records public anyway. This isn’t necessarily a negative, except that (as we’re seeing), this first round of disclosures has provided a number of less-than-encouraging details about the company’s prospects.

Who does Facebook follow? If we’re talking about top social networks, the answer is MySpace and Friendster — and Facebook readily admits that “other social networking companies that achieved early popularity have since seen their active user bases or levels of engagement decline, in some cases precipitously.”

If we’re talking about recent IPOs in the industry, the answer includes names such as Pandora, Groupon, and fellow-traveler Zynga. If FB shares behave in the same way, you can expect a quick and long-term drop below the IPO share price.

From the IPO: “The market price of our Class A common stock may be volatile or may decline, and you may not be able to resell your shares at or above the initial public offering price; and… substantial blocks of our total outstanding shares may be sold into the market as ‘lock-up’ periods end, as further described in ‘Shares Eligible for Future Sale.’ If there are substantial sales of shares of our common stock, the price of our Class A common stock could decline.”

In other words, as with most initial public offerings, there’s really very little ‘public’ involved; only preferred investors (mutual funds, pension funds, and privileged customers of the underwriting or comanaging investment banks) will get a crack at the ‘buy low’ offering price. For the rest of us, that means an immediate discouragement to investing — because IPOs typically underperform for a 7 – 24 month period after the first-day close.

4. The Mobile Disadvantage. IPO: “Growth in use of Facebook through our mobile products, where we do not currently display ads, as a substitute for use on personal computers may negatively affect our revenue and financial results; Facebook user growth and engagement on mobile devices depend upon effective operation with mobile operating systems, networks, and standards that we do not control.”

This is a serious problem, because everyone in the tech world has seen the truth of Steve Jobs’ “Post-PC era” prediction for a few years already. Without a mobile strategy, the future will be uncomfortable for any tech company — let alone one based around bite-sized bits of interpersonal communication.

Facebook does not have its own platform, unlike Google’s Android or Microsoft’s Windows Mobile (and platform-agnostic upcoming Windows 8). The biggest problem (in the company’s view) is that the mobile ‘real estate’ on the FB app is too small to allow ads without ‘degrading the user experience.’ Another (perhaps bigger) issue is that both Apple and Google take the lion’s share of any in-app purchases already. Facebook would either have to settle for a minor secondary cut, or develop a compelling HTML5 web app to lure users away from their native OS-market app — a dubious proposition at best.

5. Privacy. IPO: “Improper access to or disclosure of our users’ information could harm our reputation and adversely affect our business…our business is subject to complex and evolving U.S. and foreign laws and regulations regarding privacy, data protection, and other matters. Many of these laws and regulations are subject to change and uncertain interpretation, and could harm our business.”

Facebook has a three-pronged privacy and security problem: 1) how FB’s privacy issues are perceived by users (and prospective users); 2) what third-parties (stalkers, hackers, app developers, and advertising partners) might be doing with data, and 3) how government regulators perceive Facebook’s handling of privacy and security issues.

There’s a running joke that most of the people who complain loudly each time Facebook has a privacy revelation or design change (such as the recent Timeline) end up grudgingly dealing with it and staying on — except that each time, more and more don’t. And among the ones that do, there is an increasing awareness of how to make one’s data as private as possible — resulting in less of the ‘product’ that Facebook is selling to advertisers and app-developers.

Government regulation

Whether due to privacy or competition, regulations present a wide range of possible “claims, changes to our business practices, increased cost of operations, or declines in user growth or engagement, or otherwise harm our business,” Facebook states. In a specific example, the payments system (until now mainly useful for Zynga revenue) has also cost Facebook because of charges for transmitter licenses and they“expect to apply for additional money transmitter licenses in the United States, which will generally require us to demonstrate compliance with many domestic laws in these areas.”

In addition to the extreme examples of the ‘Great Firewalls’ of China, Iran, and others, even many ‘friendlier’ governments are taking an active role in regulation. Complying with each jurisdiction could easily offset any benefits of growth, especially in the short-term when Facebook must also commit higher expansion costs.

(The SOPA { Stop Online Piracy Act }-supporting Motion Picture Association of America has accused Demand Progress of being allied with “offshore rogue Web sites that promote the theft and illegal marketing of American products like movies, video games, and software.”)

It took an Internet-wide outcry from millions of voters to prompt Rep. Lamar Smith, author of the Stop Online Piracy Act, to postpone a vote on the controversial Hollywood-backed bill. The latest campaign is designed to build on last month’s remarkable protests, which included Wikipedia going dark for a day and Google and Amazon.com posting anti-SOPA warnings on their home pages. Irate voters overwhelmed the U.S. Senate’s Web site and, importantly, demonstrated to politicians that Internet users could be a potent political force.

Now Smith, a conservative Texas Republican, is being targeted a second time: for championing legislation that would require Internet service providers to keep track of their customers, in case police want to review those logs in the future. His bill is called H.R. 1981.

“This is yet another government assault on the Internet and its users,” said Demand Progress Executive Director David Segal. “We taught Congress a lesson last month: we need to do to H.R. 1981 what we did to SOPA, and make it clear to Lamar Smith and the rest of Congress that they can’t run roughshod over Internet freedom.”

Demand Progress, a liberal advocacy group and enthusiastic adversary of large copyright holders, claims to have generated more than 86,000 e-mails as of this afternoon to politicians opposing H.R. 1981

ISP snooping time line is like

June 2005: Justice Department officials quietly propose data retention rules.

December 2005: European Parliament votes for data retention of up to two years.

April 2006: Data retention proposals surface in Colorado and the U.S. Congress.

April 2006: Attorney General Gonzales says data retention “must be addressed.”

April 2006: Rep. DeGette proposes data retention amendment.

May 2006: Rep. Sensenbrenner drafts data retention legislation–butbacks away from it two days later.

May 2006: Gonzales and FBI Director Mueller meet with Internet and telecommunications companies.

February 2009: Two data retention bills target ISPs, hotels, coffee shops

February 2009: Copyright holders would benefit from data retention

January 2011: Justice Department calls for mandatory data retention

February 2011: White House undecided on data retention

May 2011: Wireless providers exempted from Rep. Smith’s bill

July 2011: National Sheriffs’ Association endorses data retention

Other Web sites involved in the anti-SOPA protests are now joining the anti-H.R. 1981 chorus. A DailyKos article says Smith “is back with a new antiprivacy bill”; a Reddit thread yesterday calls Smith’s proposal a “crazy snooping bill”;

Just as challengers tried to wield SOPA against incumbents–prompting Rep. Paul Ryan, one of the most influential House Republicans, to denounce it–a challenger to Maine Republican Olympia Snowe is invoking H.R. 1981.

Maine’s Tea Party Patriots state coordinator, Andrew Ian Dodge, now a Senate candidate, said today that: “I hope all our Maine representatives will join me in condemning this attack on our right to privacy.”

Because the Motion Picture Association of America was the most public supporter of SOPA, opponents were able to argue that Hollywood doesn’t understand technology and remind everyone that the late MPAA chief Jack Valenti once likened the humble analog VCR to “the Boston strangler.”

H.R. 1981 represents “a data bank of every digital act by every American” that would “let us find out where every single American visited Web sites,” Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, who led Democratic opposition to the bill, warned at the time. Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, a Wisconsin Republican and previous supporter of data retention, changed his mind and now opposes it.

The latest version of H.R. 1981 expands the information that commercial Internet providers would be required to store to include customers’ names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses, some committee members suggested. Even though H.R. 1981 is titled the “Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act,” it would give police the power to review the companies’ user logs for nearly any crime. Even Smith, during a January 2011 hearing, pointed to the problems of “illegal gambling, cigarette and prescription drug distribution, and child exploitation.” Civil litigants, for instance in divorce cases, might also be able to gain access to the logs.

In addition, an existing law called the Protect Our Children Act of 2008 requires any Internet provider who “obtains actual knowledge” of possible child pornography transmissions to “make a report of such facts or circumstances.” Companies that knowingly fail to comply can be fined up to $150,000 for the first offense and up to $300,000 for each subsequent offense.
